2025 KU SPRING REGATTA   April 26 - 27!

As in years past, KU Sailing is hosting its annual Spring regatta for the Hyland Cup at PYC on April 26th and 27th.  Teams that have rsvp'd are Baylor, Texas, University of Central Oklahoma, and Ole Miss. KState and Nebraska have also been invited.

Teams are expected to arrive on Friday night and camp at the top of the hill.  PYC members hosting and conducting the event, which will include the  Race Committee, Boat management, and Food prep for Saturday and Sunday,

The Hyland Cup honors the legacy of Bob and Suzanne Hyland, who were founding members of KU Sailing at PYC in the mid-1970s. They shepherded the incipient club into a true team that still exists today.  They continued this commitment to growing family one-design racing for over 40 years in 470s, J22s, Snipes, and Thistles.  When transitioning out of 470s into Snipes, Suzanne provided the most poignant rationale.  "When on the trapeze and the bow digs in, you can shoot your girlfriend around the forestay...but not your wife."

2023 Snipe District 2 Championship

Regatta Report

The Snipe District 2 Championship was expected to be hot and provide heated competition. It ended up “next level" for the 14 boats from 6 different states in attendance. The representation was impressive and of particular note was a mix of younger Snipe sailors attending their first District champs, with 5 sailors under 21 years old.

The RC, led by Ron Holm and Richard Oben was able to complete four races mixing Windward-Leeward and an Olympic course on Saturday with a southern breeze ranging in the teens to gusts in the low 20 mph range. The shifty gusty conditions placed a priority on tacking, depowering in the puffs and boat handling.

The event would not have been possible without some exceptional PYC volunteers. Jill Huffmire and Sarah Melling served up food and beverage. Neal and Nancy Barkley provided on-site smoked bar-be-que. And of course, a great team on the water with Ron Holm, Richard Oben, Joe Glasgow, Jeff Dobbs, and Kathleen Coode along with Sean Kalic who captured pictures of the action.
