Youth Sailing Program - 2011
The Perry Yacht Club Youth Sailing program is open to the children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews of PYC members.
As we have done for several years, we will teach classes based primarily on sailing competency rather than age.
Our first class in May will be devoted to evaluating the sailing skills of each child for proper class placement. It will be a morning to greet old friends and introduce new ones.
As in years past, we will separate the kids into three levels using the ASA youth certification process to judge sailing proficiency.
These levels:
Novice -- No previous sailing experience.
Intermediate -- Able to sail the Sunfish solo comfortably.
Advanced --Able to sail and crew a multi-crew sailing vessel.
To maximize time on the water, we will spend that Saturday doing the land-based teaching. We have tentatively picked May 21 as the date for that event, called our Knota-Pizza Party.
On-the-water training will start on Saturday, June 4 and continue the remaining three Saturdays in June. We would like to start classes promptly at 9 a.m. and end at noon. The cost of the class is $40 per student. We will have limited space in the class. Spaces fill on a first-come first-served basis. Spaces are filled when payment is received.
Two youth regattas are scheduled. The Child/Parent Regatta will take place June 18 and the Bill Sanders Memorial Regatta and Family Picnic on July 4.
This year we are excited to add four catamaran boats to the program for our teen sailors. If you have a teen who likes to go fast and get wet, please let me know and we will get him or her in the program.
The youth sailing program is a great way to involve our kids and give them hands on experience at sailing. It’s also a great way to have fun and meet other kids in the club! For the program to continue to be successful, we need volunteers to help in many ways. We always need instructors and helping hands on our four Saturdays, and we particularly need parents to pitch in to help raise money and prepare for the annual Commodore’s Cup Regatta. Proceeds from the regatta directly benefit youth sailing through purchases of sailing or teaching equipment.
Planning for the Commodore’s Cup begins early in the year, and the event takes place over the Labor Day weekend. We’ll need your help attending planning sessions, rounding up sponsors, selling ads for the program and helping with decorating registration, cleanup and the committee and marker boats. There will be plenty of jobs for every parent. You’ll hear more about this at the winter membership meeting Feb. 19. If you have questions before then, please call Jim North, director of sail education, or Terri Tilford or Matt Gatewood. Terri and Matt again this year will co-chair the Commodore’s Cup committee.
