Coastal Navigation Class (ASA 105; Sundays in March)
In this popular 4-session (24-hour) class you will learn to use traditional coastal navigation tools and publications. You will learn to determine your location on nautical charts using bearings and fixes. You will learn how to plan coastal voyages. And you will learn to use electronic navigation equipment. Classes are held at the Kansas City Sailing shop in North Lawrence (KansasCitySailing.com). The cost is $325 which includes ASA's textbook, 24 hours of class time, certification, lunch and snacks, beverages, and more. Four Sundays in March (11 am to 5 pm), March 4, 11, 18, 25.
Basic Keelboat Class (ASA 101)
In this class you will learn basic sailing skills, rigging, safety, sail vocabulary, knot tying, and much more. The fee, $350 ($300 for PYC members), includes materials and certification from ASA upon successful completion of the class. (Please note that all students must also become members of ASA for an additional fee of $39). New sailors can prepare for this class by taking the One-Day Sailing Class for Beginners. April 28-29; May 19-20, June 23-24; July 28-29; August 18-19; September 15-16.
One Day Sailing Class for Adult Beginners
This course is an ideal prerequisite to ASA Basic Keelboat Classes for those who have never sailed. The cost is $150 for a 6-hour day of sail instruction. Sundays, April 22; May 6; June 10; July 15; August 5; September 9.
Introduction to Spinnaker Sailing at PYC
It’s every sailors dream: to sail into the sunset under the beauty and splendor of a spinnaker. In this one-day class students learn the basics of spinnaker terminology and handling. The cost for this class is $150 for a 6-hour session. By arrangement.
Sailing Sisters' Education Series
These sail education sessions (organized by PYC’s Sailing Sisters) are for women sailors. They’re fun and popular so don’t miss them! Please bring a healthy, nutritious canned food donation for a local food bank. For more information contact Joan Allen at (913) 648-6028 or allenhouse4@sbcglobal.net. In February, March and April knot-tying practice will be offered at 2:30 p.m., prior to formal sessions.
